Where am I?
July 28, 2008
Dear Parents:
The heat of the summer is beginning to give way to thoughts of autumn and the return to life at KHS. A new school year brings even more improvements to our campus and to our facility. As you know, last year was the inaugural year for the Walker Science Building, our 50,000+ square feet facility which is among the finest and most envied science buildings in the Midwest. Last December our World Language department moved from the East Building to the totally renovated Northwest Building. In April we opened our brand new varsity gymnasium. The new construction and all of the movement kept us very busy last year. During this summer our renovation of the auxiliary gym and air conditioning of the Denver Miller gym are being completed. We have doubled the size of our fitness center and our wrestling room. Our new Health room is being completed as part of the gym complex. In addition, our athletic offices have been moved from the Northwest Building to the new gym area. Infrastructure and safety improvements continue to our FACS kitchen and in the entire south end of the campus. We would love for you to come to KHS and see all of the improvements that have occurred within the past year. I know that you will be as excited as we are.
There are two opportunities in the first few weeks of school to visit us at KHS.
Freshman parents and parents whose children are new to KHS are invited to our Orientation Day for all of our new students. Here is the agenda for August 18th:
8:00 – 8:45 Meeting with new students, freshman teachers, and parents in the Varsity Gym
9:00 – 9:45 Parent Orientation Meeting in McCallie Hall
9:00 – 11:00 Freshman students follow their schedule; NHS led campus tour for new 10-12 grade students
11:00 – 11:30 Free lunch for students / students depart at 11:30
11:45 Busses leave KHS
Our “Open House” will be on Thursday, August 28th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Varsity Gym. We will meet from 7:00-7:30 p.m. in the Gym. Following our meeting, you are encouraged to follow your child’s schedule and take the opportunity to meet each teacher. It is an informative and fun night. (IP’s, Study Focus and study block classes will not meet.)
I’m sure that you are aware that the first day of classes for all students is Tuesday, August 19. Our school day is from
7:50 am – 2:40 pm.
At KHS, we continue to work to make this a safe place so that our students will learn and grow into the people that they dream of becoming. Even though many of your kids like you to think they don’t need you or want you around, your on-going support for your child is critical. We know that the success of each person is ultimately up to the individual, but success at KHS continues to be predicated on the belief that the student, teacher, and parent work together for the success of each child.
With that idea in mind, I encourage you to become involved in the PTO. Our PTO has supported this district with volunteers in virtually every area of school life. PTO volunteers engage in a variety of projects. I know that your time is precious. However, I hope that you will remain active in the life of your child by supporting his/her academic goals and by supporting our PTO. Please read the enclosed information. It is intended to help orient you to opportunities for involvement at KHS.
I am looking forward to a great year and I hope to see you here at KHS.
Sincerely,
Dave Holley
