Where am I?

Reading

Thanks to the many families who submitted questions about reading and reading instruction at Keysor. Questions have been answered in a roundtable format by the following participants:

Keshia Parker, Keysor 5th Grade Teacher
Stephanie Byrne, Keysor Literacy Specialist
Heidi Ford, Kirkwood Communication Arts Facilitator
Bryan Painter, Keysor Principal

You can now listen to our Reading Roundtable discussion online (52 minutes) or download it as a podcast.

We believe the discussion was rich and informative; parents and family members are encouraged to listen even if you did not submit questions. Additional roundtable conversations will be held and recorded in coming months. If you have a topic to suggest, please email

Questions Discussed During the Roundtable Conversation

Overall Framework of Reading Instruction
What is the name of the reading curriculum?
My son can read most books to me but his teacher says he doesn't always comphrehend what he reads. Can you explain this to me?
What does reading instruction look like in various grade levels?
How are students encouraged to grow beyond where they are in reading?

Expectations We Have of Readers
My child is reading at a Level 7. What does that mean? How does it equate to a Level 1 or 2? How often is my child evaluated?
How are reading groups used and how are children identified for a group? Is this placement flexible? Does it ever change?
What are the expectations of kindergarten and first grade readers?
What should parents worry about their child's reading progress?
My child is already reading at or maybe even above grade level but doesn't seem to take it seriously. How is she being challenged as a reader? Is she being taught how to think deeply about what she is reading?

Helping Students at Home
What can we do at home to help kindergartners (and Keysor Cubs) be ready for reading?
What can be done by parents at home on a daily basis to help in the child's learning?
