Where am I?

Keysor History

The W. W. Keysor Elementary School first welcomed children in September 1930. The school was named for Judge William Winchester Keysor, a prominent Kirkwood citizen and president of the school board in the early 1900s. Designed by William B. Ittner, renowned school architect, the building has been expanded several times with new additions designed to blend with the school's traditional appearance. A wing on the south end of the building was built in 1938; a matching wing on the north end was added in 1949. In 1954, an auditorium/gymnasium was built including side wings that provided eight more classrooms. An addition to the south end of the school was completed in 1987 to house the media center (library), science/computer lab, and rooms for reading and gifted education instruction. Renovations resulting from a district bond issue in 1993 included technology infrastructure, air conditioning, ADA compliance, and interior upgrades. A covered pavilion located at the north end of the playground area for outdoor classroom and learning projects was built in 1999 thanks to the generosity of the Keysor PTO, students and community.

In 2005, the community approved Proposition I, a two-part bond initiative that provided funds for improvements and infrastructure repairs throughout the district as well as funds to complete the district’s master facilities plan. Prop I improvements at Keysor include roof replacement north/south wing, exterior painting, restroom plumbing upgrades, new domestic/fire main, and new fire alarm system.

Keysor officially formed a partnership with SSM St. Joseph Hospital of Kirkwood in September of 2000. The Partners in Education program provides opportunities for Keysor Elementary School and St. Joseph Hospital to come together and, through a mutual sharing of resources, strengthen our school’s programs and enhance our community's health.
