Where am I?
CRT Activities
A sampling of Civil Rights Team activities:
A Place at the Table Dinner - Fifth graders and adult family members gather for an informal dinner, viewing of A Place at the Table (Teaching Tolerance), and conversations about the movie. Parents are introduced to paired-share conversations, having dedicated time to both talk with and listen to their children. Small group conversations allow children and adults to have conversations with others about bias, bullying, and being allies.
World Hunger Banquet - Fifth graders and adult family members gather for conversations about hunger in America and around the world. Guests participate in a simulated activity to initiate meaningful and courageous conversations.
Civil Rights Team Retreat - Incoming fifth grade CRT members go on an overnight retreat, facilitated by Keysor staff members. Students participate in team-building and leadership activities. We establish group norms and expectations (ROPES) and begin conversations around social justice issues.

Black-and-White to Color Photo Essay Contest - Keysor fourth and fifth students were invited to participate in a contest comparing a 1960s black-and-white photo with a more recent color one. One 2007 winner highlighted a civil rights era picture of a white police officer using a fire hose to spray African-American men who were protesting. His comparative photo was of African-American and white children playing together in the spray of a sprinkler on a hot day. For more information: Announcement (pdf, 14.5KB)
Civil Rights Team Luncheons - Guests are periodically invited to speak to our fifth graders during an extended lunch period on issues related to social justice. Students "dress up" for the event, tables are covered with tablecloths, and teachers clear students' trays and trash. Guests have included teachers who have lived in or studied countries or cultures different from our own, civil rights attorneys, and an advocate for disability education.
Passing the Torch Ceremony - Held in the spring, fifth grade members of the Civil Rights Team pass the torch to 4th grade incoming members. All Keysor Kids (K-5) attend the assembly.

Martin Luther King Day Celebration - CRT members facilitate a brief assembly honoring Dr. King and has vision for a better future. Team members read quotes and lead the student body in singing songs.
“At the age where cliques begin to form, the Civil Rights Team is a wonderful opportunity for kids to "clique" together in a positive way. Since there is safety in numbers, the kids have the power of their group behind them to tackle difficult situations and be a positive force in their school and community.” -Dianne Koch, Keysor Parent
