Where am I?

Parents As Teachers

Please Take Our 2010 Parent Evaluation Survey

August 23, 2010

Hello PAT Families and Supporters,

Many of you have begun to receive calls from your Parent Educator to set up your first home visit of the year. We are very pleased to be able to get back "on the road" and into your home. We continue to problem solve how to get into your homes as often as possible given the financial cuts we have endured.

There is no doubt that our focus has been redirected by our state department of education to meet the needs of our families with "High Needs" or significant stressors. Please notify the PAT office or your Parent Educator if your family circumstances have changed and you think you might qualify for these additional services. We are eager to meet with you and develop a plan for support that could include multiple visits.

As I have mentioned in previous correspondence, Kirkwood PAT is committed to supporting our families with children under the age of 3 to the maximum extent our funds will allow. Each Parent Educator has been assigned the number of home visits to be allocated among their families. As a result, all families may not receive the same number of visits. Please know that the goal remains to meet the individual needs of each family. In addition, Parent Educators will continue to offer a Denver Developmental Screening in your home; this may be completed as an additional visit.

To further meet the requests of our families, PAT will offer our services for a fee that will just cover our costs. Any family with children ages 3-5 will be sent a registration form offering home visits from a Parent Educator for the proposed cost of $30.00/45 minute visit. This letter will be sent out pending the approval of this fee by the Board of Education in late September. Any family who would like visits beyond those offered through our state and local funding, as well as new families on our wait list, will be given the option to pay for additional visits.

I have scheduled several community DIAL screenings for children ages 3-5 here at KECC this fall. As funding for screening at this age range is limited, I recommend that you make your appointment early! By request, we will also provide DIAL screenings for a fee, to cover our costs, when funding is exhausted.

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) for the KECC building has been an invaluable support to PAT in this time of budget cuts. They have volunteered to fund the cost of staffing the Discovery Room each week and support the continuation of Messy Play and the Vehicle Fair. Most of the fund raising done to continue these activities is a result of the generosity of the families who participate in fund raising activities throughout the year at KECC. The PTO is eagerly looking for PAT families who can assist with these events and activities. The contribution of your time and ideas would be greatly appreciated. The PTO meets in the KECC Conference Room the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. If you can attend or assist this group in any way, please contact PTO President Meredith Byers at mspiekerman@hotmail.com.

Please do not hesitate to contact the PAT office at 213-6137 for any clarification or assistance in interpreting this information. I understand that it is complicated and ever changing. I appreciate your continued support and loyalty to the PAT program and your Parent Educator. We look forward to serving you with the level of support and quality that has become the hallmark of the Kirkwood PAT program!

Sincerely,

Melissa Sandbothe, KECC Principal
