Project Ideas for the Month of... February
Black History Month
. Black History Calendar Print out twelve monthly pages celebrating Black Leaders. Visit a day care center and present calendar to children. Discuss each leader and encourage youngsters to learn about them throughout the year.
2. Book of Heroes Identify local Black leaders who have made a difference. Interview them and include their descriptions in a Book of Heroes. Distribute it at community meetings.
3. Voting Rights Trace the chronology of Voting Rights in Black History. Produce flyers encouraging voter registration and distribute them throughout the community.
4. Stamps of Honor Learn how United States stamps reflect Black History. Agree on a deceased African American not currently represented and create a design portraying your choice. Send proposal to the United States Postal Service Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.
5. Harlem Renaissance Research this remarkable period. Illustrate posters of selected artists and writers. Display them in school or local library.
6. Future Role Models Mentor youngsters by reading biographies of distinguished Black Americans and making bookmarks with quotations by these leaders. Visit a pediatric ward and distribute markers to patients.
7. From Attucks to Powell Research Black contributors to our nation's military. Invite African American veterans to class and discuss their own combat and peacetime experiences. Pay tribute to them by serving at a local veterans center.
8. Interactive Treasure Hunt Take an interactive quiz on Black History by exploring a Resource List. Go online to form theses for essays on important aspects of African-American Heritage everybody should know. Share essays with other classes and send outstanding ones to the local newspaper.
9. Teaching Tolerance Discover the tolerance level of your school community by surveying classmates on attitudes about social groups. Graph results and post them in a central display area.
10. Poetry Slam Read, rehearse, remember a selection of twentieth century African American poets. Invite community and family members to a Poetry Reading at a local nursing home or senior center.

Valentines Day Ideas
1. Read Aloud Love InSelect some age appropriate Valentines Books. Read aloud to younger peers.
2. Dear Mr./Ms. Mayor Agree on a current community issue. Send elected officials letters congratulating them on their public service & suggesting ways to address your area of concern.
3. Poetry Rave Learn Valentines Day songs or poems. Better still! Create your own! Arrange a visit with local day care or elderly center so students can recite selections to an admiring audience.
4. Love a Tree Make 3D strings of hearts; on them write I love you… messages to favorite elements in nature. Attach to a "Tree outside the Classroom Window."
5. Valentines for Veterans Long before February 14, write Praise Poems honoring men & women who have served our nation. Deliver them to local Veterans Centers, Hospitals or Homeless Shelters.
6. Great Expectations Write a skit about your grade. Perform it for the incoming class.
7. Primary Colors Make a red, blue, and yellow Play Safe chart. Present it to kindergartners or primary schoolers just before recess.
8. Grounds for Love Organize & advertise a litter-free school day (week?). Reward classrooms with cleanest corridors.
9. Start a Dialogue Research Valentines Day origins & customs. Make a visual timeline. Share it with students in classes for Deaf students. Tape an oral timeline. Share it with visually impaired students.
10. Healthy Hearts Make a Food Pyramid poster. Display it in the cafeteria.
