Students grow plants in the classroom in pots and then give them to a nursing home

Civics - understand how city government is run

Students meet with officials from the city of Kirkwood or Glendale to gather information and then create an informational flyer

Students connect with a school that has children of a different culture (Islamic, etc.) then become pen pals to learn/teach about sameness and differences

Culture - community needs and solutions

Students research needs of Glendale or Kirkwood and then present their solutions to city aldermen

Students have a fundraiser for another service learning project but tie it into economics as well (money management, budgeting, etc.)

Red Cross School Chest program - students examine the resources used to provide each item for the chest

Geography - maps

Students create a simple map of the Kirkwood or Glendale area for new families (give to city hall to give out)

History - how does change affect groups of people, compromise

Students do a case study of the changes in their school and make recommendations to the school board

Government

Students find out how to get appointed to a local government committee so they can have a say

Communication Arts Letter writing skills
