Placemats
Curriculum Area: Social Studies, Art, Citizenship
Students use art skills to make decorative placemats for patient trays at a local nursing home.  Children help decide a theme for the placemats and what materials will be used.

Birthday Cards
Curriculum Area: Social Studies, Art, Citizenship
In social studies children learn community members depend upon one another and about the uniqueness of each person in their community.  Students then find a local nursing home to become birthday card buddies with.  Each child may "adopt" a senior and remember then with a homemade card on their birthday, as well as on other occasions throughout the year.

Clean-Up
Curriculum Area: Social Studies, Science, Citizenship
Young children love to be active.  Take them to a safe place to clean up.  Teach them about pollution and civic responsibility.  Have the children make posters reminding others not to litter.

Planting Gardens
Curriculum Area: Math, Science, Citizenship
Students plant flowers in pots and grow them to either transplant in a public place or to donate to a nursing home.  Students learn about plants for science and discuss how much time is needed for the growing, as well as the number of seeds and other supplies for math.

Thank You

Students learn about community workers such as police officers, firefighters, city librarians, etc. and then make a special card to thank them.

Recycling
Curriculum Area: Social Studies, Science, Citizenship, Math
Students learn about pollution and landfills and then set up a recycling center at their school.

This is Our School
Curriculum Area: Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, Citizenship
Children make a group book about their school.  They may dictate or write the information.  They also illustrate the book.  The book could then be loaned to new families to help them become familiar with the school.

Welcome
Curriculum Area: Social Studies, Art, Citizenship
Children reflect on what it feels like to enter a new school for the first time.  They then help design and create a welcome banner to hang in the main entry to the school.

Puppy Care Kits
Curriculum Area: Science, Language Arts, Art
Students make an owner's manual for children who have new puppies.  Information and illustrations pertaining to the care of puppies is included.  Homemade or store bought dog treats could also be included.  Students visit a local pet clinic or humane society and donate the kits for distribution.

 Bookmark Factory
Curriculum Area: Language Arts, Citizenship, Art
Students make bookmarks to help insure proper handling of library books.  They distribute these books to their school library or local public library.

Take-Home Library
Curriculum Area: Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Art
Students collect used picture books to become part of a Take-Home Library.  The children decide how the books will be distributed and for how long.  This is to encourage literacy in early childhood.

Get Well Activity Bags
Curriculum Area: Art, Math, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts
Student create and distribute activity bags for young patients in hospitals.

Calendars
Curriculum Area: Art, Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Fine Motor Skills
 Students make calendars which include important dates, events, holidays which are significant to the class.  The children design the cover together and a page for each month.  The calendars can be donated to a nursing home or sold as a fundraiser for a chosen charity.
