Students collected "Pennies for Haiti" beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 19 through Friday, Jan. 22. Learners were asked to bring in coins, paper money and checks (payable to the American Red Cross). Their goal was $100.00 per classroom or a total of $2200.00 or more for the school. Information was sent to families explaining what they were doing and suggesting ways in which money could be collected.
As a visual, each teacher bought a gallon jug of water for their classroom and put the jug into a large basin. As the students brought in their money, they put it into the jug. Their focus was on replacing the clean water with money so that the money could then be used to provide clean water for the people of Haiti. They also provided students some information via morning announcements on the country of Haiti, earthquakes and relief efforts that were taking place.
