Types of Service

   Direct Service
- This type of service puts the students in direct contact with the people they are helping.  
Examples:
A student in a reading class adopts a nursing home patient with whome she reads a book.

Students in a social studies class visit a veteran's home and prepare life histories of the veterans.

Students in a health class set up a free health fair for members of the community.

    Indirect Service

- In this type of service, there is no direct contact with the group being helped.  
Examples:
Students in a math class work with measurements to assist in a habitat house.

Students in a drama class perform a play to raise money for a charity.

Students in a social studies class read a novel about the less fortunate and do a food drive to support the local food pantry.

Students in a science class do a stream clean up and learn to test water quality.

    Advocacy

- In this type of service, the students advocate for a cause.  
Examples:
Students in a communication arts class make calls to local businesses to support a neighborhood watch program.

Students in a civics class write letters to the editor to support some issue affecting their community.
