Past Projects
3rd Grade Voter Registration Fair
Third grade students from Robinson, Keysor, and Westchester sponsored a voter registration fair on September 29th to help register people prior to last November’s election. The third grade social studies curriculum includes a unit on government, with a focus on the voting process and the importance of voting. As an extension of this unit, students then publicized the Voter Registration Fair within their school, to school families, and within the community. Students created signs/posters, which included information about the event, what is needed to register, and why it is so important to vote. The actual voter registration took place at the Kirkwood Public Library and was staffed by library employees, as well as help from the League of Women Voter volunteers. (Kim Driscoll, teacher at Robinson, coordinated the service learning project for all schools involved.)
Westchester Students Help Celebrate Veterans Day
Music teacher, Elizabeth Phillips, wanted to reach out to veterans on this Veterans Day. She began the project by reading the students books about veterans, showed them pictures, and they watched a short clip about war and veterans. Then, on November 11th, the students went to a local nursing home to sing songs and pass out Veterans Day cards to the residents. She plans to do this project again in the spring and have some veterans come and speak to the students too.
Westchester Girls on the Run Help Others
Westchester girls participating in Girls on the Run held a drive for the Humane Society. It was a school wide drive that brought in many items. The following teachers coach the girls: Beth Doht, Tahira Terkman, Courtney Wilson, and Sheena Coakley.
Westchester Completes Many Projects
Students at Westchester Elementary participated in many service projects during first semester. They held a successful canned food drive (which included guidance lessons on poverty), collected shoes, and, in their family groups, made cards for area nursing homes.
UNITE Update
Westchester Elementary students all participated in monthly character education lessons. In addition, the 4th and 5th grade students learned about different sorts of bullying, how to build classroom communities and how to handle the triangle of oppression. This was a week long residence program from the Metro Theater Company.
