Pennies for Peace

Pennies for Peace

Tillman 2nd graders have worked hard on a project called "Pennies For Peace".  They became interested when one student finished listening to the Young Reader's Edition of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. Drew Dryden spoke to his class about the true story and got the ball rolling for the project.  Soon all four classes began collecting pennies to donate to help build schools and provide supplies for schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

We learned that a penny, which is nearly worthless here, is valuable enough in Pakistan and Afghanistan to buy a pencil for a child who might otherwise not have one.  One dollar can pay for a teacher's salary for one day!  Tens of thousands of students from around the world have participated in "Pennies for Peace" creating a feeling of belonging to one global family. This project fit in wonderfully with our Economics unit as well as our ongoing math lessons of counting money, organizing materials into groups of ten, and noticing even and odd patterns when adding numbers together.

We ended the project with a field trip to Kirkwood Commerce Bank and The Magic House.  At the The Magic House we played in the "Village" with play money at the bank, pizza parlor, and the grocery store.  At the bank, we saw the vault, the drive up window from the inside, and learned about saving and investing.  We also poured our coins into the coin counter and received a check for the sum of $329.27 to mail to "Pennies for Peace".  (story by Helen Ermel, Tillman 2nd grade teacher)
