Past Projects

Learning and Serving at Tillman!
During November the 5th graders at Tillman held a drive to benefit soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Students collected 26 boxes (paper box sized boxes) of items for A Soldier's Wish List, an organization that sends goods to troops on a monthly basis. They also held a food drive to support KirkCare.

To accentuate the "learning" part of both endeavors, students researched the geography and cultures of Iraq and Afghanistan to better understand the areas where service people are stationed. For the food drive, students researched facts about poverty to learn about the issue of hunger. For both activities students created flip charts of the information they acquired and then shared their learning with younger classes as an effort to inform as well as promote the drives. Both projects would not have taken place without the guidance and support of the 5th grade teachers: Stephanie Bennett, Camille Fried, Jennifer Manuell, and Brooke Williams.

Coat Drive to Benefit the Kirkwood Community
Students at North Kirkwood Middle School, Tillman, KECC, and Nipher helped collect coats for a Kirkwood Community Coat Drive. Students helped educate other students about poverty and then created posters, emails, and flyers to advertise the drive. Students helped collect many of the almost 500 coats that were quickly claimed on November 13th.

Tillman Creates a More Meaningful Canned Food Drive
Students in Camille Fried’s 5th grade class wanted to make their canned food drive more meaningful this year. They used information provided by Maria Stobbe (service learning coordinator), as well as information they found through their own research, to create a flip chart about hunger. It was shown to all students while the food drive was being held.

Tillman Third Graders use Learning to Give Back
Third grade students in Jennifer Dieken-Buchek’s class had to decide on a class collection for their math investigation.  They decided to collect pennies so they could be donated to the Heifer Project.  So far, they have collected over $30 in pennies!
