Past Projects

Kirkwood Youth Service Tops 500 hours by October 21st!
Kirkwood Youth Service members have been hard at work during first semester.  They hosted their annual tie-dye booth at the Greentree festival.  Prior to the festival, about 50 KHS students made about 300 shirts to sell, with all proceeds donated to the charity of the buyer’s choice.  KYS members also volunteered at many other events, including an e-cyling drive in Des Peres and hosting a canned food drive at KHS.

KHS Students Use Their Skills
KHS Graphic Design students used their Photoshop skills to create design projects for real clients. Students were asked to find a teacher, adult, club, or event sponsor and design a poster or flyer to meet their client’s need using their Photoshop skills. Some of their work included: flyer for the KHS canned food drive, poster for the pommie dancing fundraiser, club profile posters, CD covers, and many more! KHS Annual MDA
The KHS football team once again sold paper footballs to benefit MDA.  They raised $4,000!

KHS Journalism Helps Our Little Haven
The KHS journalism students participated in their annual trip to Our Little Haven this holiday season. About 20 students, along with sponsor Mitch Eden, packed five cars full of OLH Wish List items and delivered them to OLH. Sponsor, Mitch Eden, says of the project, “It is such a great place and it truly makes the kids stop and realize how blessed and fortunate we all are.”

KHS UNITE hosted Staff Appreciation Night at a football game on October 13th
KHS UNITE teamed with the Varsity Football Squad to recognize KHS faculty and staff.  As a token of appreciation for all they do to make a difference for the students, the varsity players asked certain staff members to wear their jerseys to the game.  In addition, they asked ALL staff to sit in the designated area on the south end of the stands to cheer on the Pioneers.  Randy Kriewall commemorated the festivities by posting pictures on the UNITE bulletin board across from the Red & White Conference Room.

"Erase the Hate"
KHS participated in national "Erase the Hate" Day meant to promote a community where all races, religions and cultures live in peace, harmony and mutual respect.  KHS UNITE encouraged EVERYONE to wear PURPLE as a way of speaking out against violence, bullying, harassment, etc.  In addition, GSA sold purple ribbons for students and staff wanting to join the "Erase the Hate" event on October 20th.

KHS also asked a Kirkwood detective to make a presentation to the staff about cyberbullying and has some juniors who are going through the Teen Baseline program which changes beliefs about alcohol and drugs.

Both KHS and NKMS now have “Bullying Stops Here” signs prominently displayed at the entrances to their buildings.  This is one small part of an effort to stop bullying in the schools.

PSA
KSD UNITE has asked each school to create a PSA centered on a different aspect of “Respect” that will then be shown to students across the district.  The PSAs are created by the students and include discussion questions.  Each month students will see a different PSA and then participate in meaningful discussions.  The goal is to spark thoughtful discussions about character, as well as give students across the district the same message and common language.
