Kirkwood Symphonic Orchestra to Perform at Carnegie Hall on March 28, 2010

The Kirkwood High School Symphonic Orchestra has been selected to perform at the 2010 Instrumental Music Festival at Carnegie Hall next Spring. One of just three high school instrumental groups selected nationwide, Kirkwood will perform on March 28.

The festival is scheduled from March 26-29. A team of judges from the Field Studies Center of New York, sponsors of the Instrumental Music Festival and other educational travel programs, reviewed the KHS orchestra's application form as well as an audition tape before making the final selection. The Instrumental Music Festival is held annually to provide students with a rich educational experience.

In addition to performing in one of the world's most renowned concert halls, the students will take a tour of New York City, see a Broadway show, tour the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island National Park, and visit the Empire State Building, among other city landmarks.

In the coming weeks, the symphonic orchestra students will embark on a year-long fundraising campaign to generate funds for the unprecedented trip. If you are interested in supporting the KHS Symphonic Orchestra, a donor card/envelope is enclosed in this program.

High school orchestra classes meet for a 55-minute class period on a seven-day cycle schedule, and are divided into two orchestras.

The Symphonic Orchestra, directed by Patrick Jackson, meets daily, with pull-out rehearsal with winds and percussion. Students can participate in various chamber ensembles throughout the school year. They also have opportunities for solo performances at orchestra concerts. With an enrollment of approximately 54 students, this group studies a variety of orchestral periods and styles with an emphasis on 20th century American music.

The Concert Orchestra, directed by Kelly Judge, consists of approximately 40 students, grades 9-12. This orchestra has existed for nearly ten years, but has evolved immensely over the past seven in both size and ability. Throughout the year, these students focus on creating a solid foundation regarding technique and ensemble playing. This group also focuses on sight reading skills, as well as concentrating on a varied genre of performance pieces.
