Where am I?

This is an important year full of transitions. First grade is typically the year that real reading and writing take place. Young children are eager to learn and it is a real joy to see the changes that develop. My goal is to always do what is best for children.
I have been a teacher for 19 years and I have seen many educational trends come and go. I know the importance of play, social interactions, hands-on experiences, and the value of respect. Reading, writing, math, science, and social studies are taught through a variety of methods. I try to meet the needs of each child by listening and observing. I take my cue from each child and gradually give what is needed. It is extremely important to celebrate small success. The wonderful part of teaching first grade is there are so many celebrations!
Each child will progress at his/her own rate, acquiring skills as he/she is developmentally ready. Maintaining each child’s self-esteem and helping him/her build a strong foundation for growth is my main focus. I love my job and feel very fortunate to be part of so many young lives.
I am a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University and hold two degrees in Early Childhood. I have a B.S. in Early Childhood and an A.A. in Child Care and Guidance. I have attended Webster University, Maryville University, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis while studying for my Master’s Degree.
I am married and have two children. My son is a senior at Kirkwood High School and my daughter attends North Kirkwood Middle School. My husband Kirk is a wonderful husband and father. My family is the most important thing in my life. I am blessed to have each of them. Away from school, I enjoy spending time with my family, shopping, reading, vacationing at the beach, and exercising.
