Where am I?

Portfolio Project

Graphic Design 2 Portfolio Requirements

Tips for a Good Portfolio Layout

1. Attractive Case-Your case should be reflective of you and your style of design. It should contain your name and contact information especially if it is on a CD, so someone doesn’t have to open the files up on a computer to get a hold of you.
2. Background Paper should be the same, neutral color. Avoid switching background colors. Use a texture YOU made; this is more impressive.
3. Be Consistent- Like your paper, the work and placement (layout) should also be consistent. Keep spacing the same also.
4. Place items in order- You should “Wow” the viewer at the beginning and again at the end. Be sure to show development projects and actual pieces like logo designs, advertisements.
5. Group by category, skill, and technique. Place all your Photoshop items together, and then your Illustrator items together.
6. Label your work. Sometimes you will not be there to explain what the project was or the techniques you used, so follow a format and label all your work, what the project details were, what you did, what the concept was, what style you used, and explain your techniques.
7. Include your Resume. Usually place this at the end. Depending on whether you are applying for college, a scholarship, or a job, your resume should be tailored to each. Since you are using your portfolio as an end of year assessment, be sure your resume includes contact information, Education, Special Classes/Courses, Work Experience, Volunteer Activities, Clubs/Athletics, Honors/Awards, and References.

Each Portfolio Piece should contain the following:

  • PROJECT TITLE: Keep it short (Logo Design, CD Cover, Graduation Announcement, etc.)
  • DESCRIPTION: Describe what the viewer sees. Even though you think it is obvious, it may not be to the viewer. Include the size.
  • SOLVING CONCEPT/PROCESS: What is it the client wanted? What problems did you have to solve? How did you go about solving the problem for your client or coming up with your unique solution to the problem. Give some background about the company. What makes your idea dynamic and better than your competitor?
  • SPECIAL SKILLS/TECHNIQUES: What technical skills did you use? List the software and any special effects, filters, or unique techniques.
  • DATE: When was this completed? Month/Year
