Where am I?
5th grade
What is REACH?
REACH is a program for gifted children that encourages higher level thinking and challenges kids who need extra enrichment beyond their classroom curriculum.
What we're working on:
This year we are exploring futuristic thinking. This means we are forecasting what the future could possess based on current trends. We also are researching ways in which we might bend a current trend to improve its ending in the future.
We are also studying science fiction and are looking to see which predictions from the books War of the Worlds and Time Machine, The White Mountains and Atherton: House of Power have happened the way the books predicted. Everyone will have the opportunity to read each book.
We are also looking at our best abilities and characteristics and magnifying them to superhero proportions by creating our own unique superhero.
Code Breaking:
Code breaking is a warm-up activity we do each REACH day. We take symbols and put the into words. Example 20 28 5 22 = give. Every week the code is different. We get better and faster each week. It’s a fun way to start your mind up for the week.
Science Fiction:
We’ve been studying science fiction and futurology. We’re going to read different sci-fi books from different time periods. We’re going to compare what was written long ago and how it really is today. We define sci-fi by what may be possible, but not proven yet.
Superheroes:
Each year the fifth grade does a superhero project. We take our personality traits and turn ourselves into superheroes. For example, Eric’s older brother Matt created…Inventor Man. He had a stereo on his shoulder and a zapper in his hand. He had a shirt with a big X on it.
Teaching Tolerance:
Each week we look at a poster that has a quote or a phrase on it and then try to put it in our own words and figure out what it means to us. For example: We will surely get to our destination if we join hands, by Aung San Suukyi.
Game Days:
The last Thursday of the quarter we get to choose any game or activity that has educational purposes. For example, we can use Legos to build cars for the hermit crabs (Hershey, Sandy and Shyguy). Anther example is when we play chess or build marble mazes.
Flaws/Strengths:
We made a list of our flaws and strengths. We tried to put a positive spin on our flaws. For examples. Mira says she trips over her feet when she is trying to make a proud exit. The positive in that is that she doesn’t get too full of herself. Kate is impatient, but she can multi-task.
Homework Section:
5th grade does not have REACH homework every week. When it is assigned, it will be added here.
5th grade schedule:
5th grade REACH kids come for 180 minutes on Thursdays in three time blocks: 9:00-9:50, 10:45-11:35, and 1:45-3:05.
Parent Bulletin Board:
