Where am I?

About Me!

About Me...

My daughter Amy just told me that my web page was OK but that it needed an "About Me" section, so what the heck...

I was born in '61 in St Louis, MO (U. City to be more precise).  My father is a retired ophthalmologist who served as chair for the Ophthalmology Department of Washington University Medical School for many years.  My mother is a self-employed social activist (semi-retired) who has dedicated her life to a variety of causes -- most recently and most passionately, the right to adequate housing for all citizens.  I have four brothers -- all older: one is a mechanic here in St. Louis, one is an ophthalmologist here in St. Louis, one is a musician in Madison WI, and is one a public arts advocatein Minneapolis, MN.

I have been teaching chemistry since I graduated from college in '83, and I love it more than ever, although I will be the first to admit that sometimes I find all the technololgy I'm required to incorporate a bit overwhelming.  Nonetheless, I am grateful for all that it enables me to do... such a communicate right now with you... whoever you are out there in cyberspace that is reading about me at this very moment!

I married the love of my life: Kathy, and she currently teaches math at Forsyth School in Clayton.  Together we play a lot of scrabble, and I win about 51% of the time.  We have three incredible daughters...

Jenna (left) graduated from KHS in '00 and Colorado College in '05, worked for years as an ABA therapist for children with autism and now serves as a supervisor for other ABA therpists in the St. Louis area.

Amy (right) graduated from KHS in '07 and is currently a sophomore at Carleton College in MN.  She has worked summers at Anytown, a program run by NCCJSL.

Elizah (middle) is a fifth grader at the College School in Webster Groves and she is a very accomplished cook, baby sitter, fashion critic, ping-pong player and putt-putt golfer.

As for me, I've always liked camping and biking and cooking and math and science and puzzles and games and contra dancing and big dogs and good pizza.  More recently, I've come to like disc golf and racquetball, but I'm not very good at either one.  Oh yeah, and I really like windsurfing too!

My dislikes include beets and cell phones and people who throw their cigarette butts out their car windows.

I spend my free time doing fun stuff with the family -- they mean more to me than anything.  On the side, I also present workshops and demonstration shows for science teachers across the country!  That might sound kind of geekie, but I really do enjoy it, and it has taken me to such wonderful places and allowed me to express my creativity in ways... oh, who am I fooling, it is pretty geekie... but that's who I am.
