Superintendent VLOG for July 2010

Where am I?

Quick Facts:

Proposition 1 is a no tax rate increase bond issue.  If Proposition 1 passes, no new taxes will be added to the district's tax rate.  The debt service levy will be restructured to generate funds to meet immediate needs.  Proposition 1 will address needs at the elementary and middle school levels to include creating additional classrooms to allow all kindergarten students (half-day and tuition based full day) to attend their home attendance center,  safety issues, and improving science classrooms/labs at both middle schools.

Proposition 2 is a 4.5 cent (estimate) tax increase.  If Proposition 1 and Proposition 2 both pass, the annual estimated cost to a $250,000 home is $21.00 a year.  Proposition 2 will address student and community wellness needs and extracurricular activities (aquatic center and fields).

Superintendent's July VLOG

The Kirkwood Board of Education recently approved a resolution to place two bond issues on the November 2 ballot.

This action was taken after a two year facility study was conducted by parents, students, staff members, administrators and members of the Board of Education. This study reviewed the needs of each individual school and provided updates to the district’s long-range facility plan.

I want to assure you that during the facility study process, the goals and objectives of the district’s five year strategic plan as well as fiscal responsibility were considered.

With Proposition 1 and Proposition 2, our residents have the opportunity to provide our students and community with improved facilities as well as enhanced educational opportunities at a very small cost.

I feel strongly that the benefits to our students, the timing, and the costs of the proposed facility improvements warrant placing these issues before the voters.

Our community deserves the opportunity to decide whether these proposals should be funded.  The decision to complete these significant facility improvements should be made by our entire community – not by a handful of citizens, or for that matter, by the Board of Education alone.

Allowing our community the opportunity to vote on Proposition 1 and Proposition 2 is the most democratic and fair approach to this issue.

Thank you!
