Kirkwood Weightlifting Club wins Top Medals and Team Award at National Competition

Eleven members of the Kirkwood Weightlifting Club competed in the 2008 USA Weightlifting School Age National Championships in Orlando, June 20-22, with eight members winning national medals, including three new national champions, three silver medals for second place, two bronze for third, a fourth place and a fifth place finish. Kirkwood also won the First Place Men’s team award for 13 and under.

Salute to Kirkwood High School Class of 2008

Kirkwood High School held commencement exercises for 395 graduates and six foreign exchange students on May 31 at Queeny Park. Derrick Staten was announced as class valedictorian for having achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 4.2454 on a 4.0 scale. Julie Kennedy, 4.2356 GPA, was announced as salutatorian.

North Glendale Elementary School Dedicates Outdoor Learning Pavilion

May 29, 2008

Dignitaries who gathered recently at the dedication of a new outdoor learning pavilion for North Glendale Elementary School included Kirkwood School District Superintendent Dr. David Damerall, Glendale Mayor Richard Magee, Principal Todd Benben, Tom Waltz, retired principal of North Glendale School, and representatives of the North Glendale PTO. The pavilion, which will serve both school and community, was dedicated in honor of Waltz for his service to the school and the Kirkwood School District.

Spotlight: Our Community

KHS Class of 2008 welcomes Mike Swoboda, former mayor of Kirkwood, as an honorary member.

To honor Mike Swoboda for his longtime commitment to the community and to the Kirkwood School District, Dr. David Damerall, superintendent of schools, Matt Cottler and Scott Stream, members of the Kirkwood School District Board of Education, presented Swoboda with an honorary degree and the official KHS red cap and gown at the Kirkwood City Council meeting in April. Among his many contributions to the school district, Swoboda has served as a classroom volunteer for Robinson Elementary School for more than 15 years.

In his last official act as mayor, Swoboda spoke to a standing-room only crowd at the council meeting and thanked the community for its support. He encouraged all to keep Kirkwood a strong and beautiful place forever.
