North Glendale Students Video Chat with Author
Meeting a published author was just a click away for 15 students at North Glendale. A combined group of second grade literacy focus students in Mrs. Vicki Johnson’s class were able to spend a half hour conversing via SKYPE with Mrs. Dori Hillstead Butler, author of the Buddy Files books. “These books”, said Mrs. Johnson, “made a huge difference in the reading lives of my students this year. They couldn’t wait to get to class to find out if Buddy solved the mystery.”
Kirkwood Music Department Writes “Kirkwood” Song in Tribute to School and City History

The Kirkwood School District Music Department collaborated with composer Clancy Weeks in writing the sheet music for a Woodwind Chamber Ensemble piece titled, Kirkwood.

The ensemble premiered Kirkwood at a concert in February at the Thomas N. Keating Performance Center at Kirkwood High School.
Kirkwood is a work devoted to the history of the town and its “founder” James P. Kirkwood, chief engineer of the Pacific railroad. As Kirkwood was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the piece is intended to emulate the music of the Scottish Pipe Banks and its folk song traditions.
The first movement, Battle for the Bell, is the annual “Turkey Day” football game between Kirkwood and Webster Groves that has taken place nearly continuously since 1907 with the winner receiving the prized “Frisco Bell.”
The second movement, Missouri River Runner, is an impression of the journey as the train passes by and over the Missouri River. At the end, you will hear the train as it pulls into the Kirkwood Station.
Greentree Parade, the final movement, was specifically chosen to highlight the historical nature of the work-specifically, the Greentree Parade, held each year in Kirkwood as part of its Greentree Festival. The festival has been in existence since 1961 when local Boy Scouts gave away trees and seeds to replace those destroyed by an outbreak of Dutch Elm disease.
KHS Students Nominated in Theatre Awards

ARTS FOR LIFE nominated Kirkwood High School senior Max Kramer, juniors Carrie Antoine and Rachel Bisch and freshman Cole Whiting for the Thirteenth Annual Best Performance Awards for Community Musical Theatre. Kramer, Antoine, Bisch and Whiting were selected as nominees in the Best Actor or Actress category in a Youth Musical production for the musical Footloose by St. Louis Summer Players.
